Educational/Play Therapy

Educational therapy is designed to help children who are experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties within the school environment or at home. The Sheila Ferrari Dyslexia Centre offers clinically supervised and strictly confidential therapy. It is embarked on only with the full cooperation of the parents and related professionals.

“Play therapy is based on the fact that play is the child’s natural medium of self expression. It is an opportunity which can allow a child to ‘play out’ his feelings and problems just as in adult therapy an individual ‘talks out’ his difficulties.” (Axline, V. 1947).

Family Therapy

Parents/ Carers may also need to talk through their family concerns and this facility can be offered on a single session basis with the Educational Therapist. This can be particularly helpful when the way forward seems unclear. Options can be talked through in an unhurried way.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapists assess and evaluate the performance skills of children who have learning difficulties. Occupational therapy helps children to develop the fine and gross motor skills that are necessary for activities of daily living within school, home and play. The objective of the therapy is to improve body coordination, upper and lower body strength, muscle tone, posture, reflex action, balance and body awareness. It also addresses perceptual motor skills including hand eye coordination, auditory-motor integration, tactile discrimination and handwriting skills.

Speech and Language Therapy

Speech and language therapy is specifically for children with speech, language and communication impairment. Speech and Language therapists work one-to-one with a range of students who experience a range of disorders and difficulties. These include pronunciation problems, stammers, specific language problems, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Autism and Downs Syndrome. We work closely with other professionals and view parental input as a vital component of successful outcomes.

“Thank you for all of your support and your calming influence in theses recent months. Thank you also for believing in our daughter, we are very proud of her.”  Parent
